MLB’s Fetish

I’ll get this out of the way because too many people will overreact and not read my whole piece.

Jackie Robinson seems like a nice guy, a genuinely good person, a solid, above-average player and I’m glad he got his opportunity to play in Major League Baseball. Baseball is the better for it.

Having said that, baseball would also be better to drop its bizarre obsession with Jackie Robinson; an obsession that gets worse each year.

This weekend “Jackie” has been the center of the MLB world (and for much of the preceding week as well). It’s the 70th anniversary of superhero Jackie Robinson “crossing the color barrier” and evicting the Klan or somebody or bad thoughts from baseball. Witnessing at the voluminous hagiography, this is now considered the single most important event in baseball history.

I was trying to watch the Atlanta-San Diego game on Fox Sports’ FS1 Saturday night but after a couple of innings the announcers turned away from covering the game to discuss Robinson and his “legacy.”

It’s slightly comedic for the announcer to ask various people how “Jackie personally affected them”? Asking people who weren’t even alive then and have no experience with actual racial discrimination rather than the whiff of an essence of a shadow of a reflection of an imputation of racism that exists in our world of “microggressions” is pure virtue signaling.

For those keeping score “micro” in the numerical sense means one-millionth. Pray, tell, libtards, how much of an aggression is one-millionth of an aggression?

But back to the game.

White media folks and an ex-baseball player (black) gushed about how they couldn’t be people today if Robinson hadn’t surmounted the “color barrier.” You see the same behavior at certain religious meetings, where people confess that they couldn’t get out of bed or function daily without help from their “Lord, Jesus Christ” or Mohammed.

I have yet to hear of any miracle cures attributed to him but give it another couple of years…

Eventually reliably white liberal Ken Rosenthal was brought in to officiate a discussion about how the number of black players was shockingly low and falling — from 9-10% a decade ago to 7-8% today.

How can this be when “Jackie” did so much?????!!!!! Don’t people appreciate what “Jackie” did for them?????!!!!! They are insulting “Jackie”!!!!!

Of course the liberal asserted that this was not the result of “choices” made by young black athletes, choosing to play other sports like basketball and football. No, there had to be a darker explanation. Something that could be used as a club to batter someone, something. There was a force unnamed yet existing and pulling strings causing this precipitous fall.

You see, “urban” kids were poor so therefore they turned away from baseball. That these very same kids somehow manage to play football or basketball and walk around with $100+ Air Jordan shoes, expensive clothes and smartphones didn’t come up. “Poverty” was the all-purpose answer and we should be ever-so-concerned and put a stop to it.

That actually poor kids in the Caribbean or Latin America somehow manage to get pretty good at baseball without special MLB-funded programs and U.S. taxpayer-supported facilities programs wasn’t explored. No, all agreed, the obvious solution was to spend more money on “urban” facilities and efforts to recruit young black players. That’s what Jackie would have wanted (though I doubt he had access to such facilities or efforts).

Interestingly, the discussion touched on Title IX’s effect upon college baseball. Title IX is the nefarious government regulation used by the Dept. of Education to drive down men’s sports programs at the college level while increasing the number women given sports-based scholarships. Even if they can’t find enough women, schools have to remove men to equalize the numbers. Many schools have shut down men’s teams in tennis, wrestling, track and field, etc., to placate their DOE bureaucratic masters. Some smaller college and less-successful college baseball teams have folded over the decades of Title IX’s existence. My undergrad alma mater SMU folded its team in the early 1980s in this manner.

Rosenthal insisted that somehow Title IX had only affected young “urban” players, preventing them from getting into college baseball programs, though it somehow had not affected others in, say, rural or suburban areas. Nor was it brought up that many players, especially very good ones, go straight from high school into the minor leagues, bypassing the college baseball chokepoint. They also managed to avoid the point that college baseball overall is seemingly more popular than ever before and awash in money.

The obvious solution would be to banish Title IX back to the Mordor from whence it came but none of those in the discussion dared go there. They knew Twitterstorm that would come forth and might find themselves sent to reeducation camps or even fired.

After entering the third inning of this sidebar I turned away and went elsewhere.

Jackie made numerous guest appearances in the several other games I caught over the weekend — some of which included mentioning other politically correct efforts for young girls, the “Trailblazer” program. Apparently there are not enough girls playing baseball or softball or something. At that point they might introduce some young girl or a female sideline reporter who’d assure us of the goodness of said program.

As part of the Robinson idolatry, every team in Major League Baseball has been forced to “retire” Jackie Robinson’s number 42 — even if Robinson didn’t play for them (he played for the Dodgers at the MLB level) or they weren’t in existence at the time. Compounding this, every player on every team in every game played on Saturday had to wear the number, 42. It was a bit confusing.

None of this is done for, say, Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Nap Lajoie, Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Ted Williams, famed and far more accomplished players.

This reflects the liberal obsession with putting “racism” or skin color above all else. Such a side issue drives baseball rather than the playing of baseball itself.

That’s not right for baseball. It turns the sport into yet another political football. Liberals will politicize everything.

As some have wisely said, the way to put racism behind us is to no longer practice it; even if it is thought to be well-meant.

People living today are not part of the segregation era. Beyond serving as a warning of weakness and a history lesson, contemporaries should not burdened with carrying the guilt and sinful burdens of the past. People of today must be judge by what they do, today and in their lives not what others departed did in the past.

Jackie Robinson’s greatest accomplishment will be realized when he fades and is mostly remembered for his on the field performance: the winner of the first Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, being the 1949 National League MVP, having a stellar .311 career batting average, being at that time maybe the best base stealer since Ty Cobb (maybe better), a top-flight and underrated fielder and being one of the leading overall players in the late 1940s and early 1950s. That would be true equality.

That’s a fine and deserving place in history.

Dao Played the Race Card

As details emerge from the “Dr.” David Dao-United Airlines incident, it is quickly beginning to resemble an urban myth like “Hands up, don’t shoot!”

It turns out that when Dao was first asked to leave, steeped as he no doubt is in politically correct grievance-mongering, he immediately reached for the race card and asked if he was being asked to leave because he is of Asian descent.

When police officers arrived he challenged them to drag him out of the seat. They proceeded to do that while he squealed like a misbehaving child being sent to “timeout.”

My guess is that Dao is a long-time bully, playing on political correctness to get his way all the time. He’s not used to be told no and thus he reacted like a spoiled child.

This cannot stand. Terrorist planners watching this incident are taking notes and will see that the best way to get onboard, possibly unexamined, will be to send a minority who will play the race card if confronted. Or play the Islamophobia card.

If Dao triumphs, most gate and ground crew will simply avoid examining or confronting a minority for fear of their jobs and retribution from Twitter mobs and possibly PC enforcers in the government.

We have been warned.

The Walking Dumb

Yup!

I have no idea what actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s politics, and they shouldn’t matter, but I hope he’s one of us or at least not being a liberal after this ridiculous incident — “‘Walking Dead’ Star on T-Shirt Hassle: ‘People Are Stupid.’

Ian Lucraft is a loser looking to be offended. Most people, probably 99% of them, are not going to have any idea what Lucraft’s whining about so how can the masses he alludes to be “offended?”

Can you be offended if you don’t realize that you’re supposed to be offended? Can you be offended if you aren’t, um, actually offended?

Buddhist koans have been built on less.

Perhaps Mr. Lucraft is angling to be Secretary of Offense (without portfolio).

Hey, Lucraft, you missed an offense — the differently-abled, legless division, are offended by the mention of “toe.” They are missing some of theirs. The trauma! The horror!

Mr. Lucraft, a lot of things offend me but I don’t demand that they be removed from the public. I understand that there might be people who like those things. I’m willing to take one for the team, obviously you aren’t. You demand that everyone kowtow to your tastes. (Ooooh, ‘kowtow,’ that’ll crank Lucraft’s Offense-O-Meter to 11).

You, sir, are a Nazi.

I’m offended by Lucraft’s stupidity. I guess it’s too much to hope he’ll be pulled.

Trumportunity: Start With E

One of the first things, if not the first thing, for Donald Trump to do after inaugurated is to “Drain the Swamp.” This is already a popular meme for The Donald. And he’s given an indication that he will relish swinging the hammer to destroy the weaponized elements of the federal government that are used to enrich liberals, power them and to destroy conservatives and other political enemies.

A good start, as I call it, would be start start with the Es: Education, EPA and Energy. Two cabinet-level departments and an agency of great power have been compromised and turned into nests of corrupt leftism enriching like-minded cronies, funding like-minded activists, expanding government control over the citizenry along with harassing businesses and taxpayers.

The Department of Education, part of Jimmy Carter’s legacy, should be simply shut down, rooted out. It serves no useful or Constitutional purpose. Its Obama administration takeover of the student loan market is a ticking time bomb. The federal government has no business in the student loan market.

Even scarier from the Dept. of Ed has been the political mischief it has foisted upon the American education system. At all levels from collegiate to kindergarten, there’s no segment that has escaped the Sauronic eye of Ed.

Particularly pernicious has been its “Office of Civil Rights” (or something like that. This nest of crazed leftie vipers has issued “guidelines” threatening numerous schools at all levels with defunding and prosecution if those schools do not accede to the hardcore leftwing dreams of the office’s bureaucrats and appointees. Implementation of “Title IX” alone would be reason to blow the building up and salt the ground.

It has also pushed the shocking decline of educational achievement and turbocharging of political correctness. The absurd surreality of our campuses with special snowflakes, along with the Kafkaesque behavior and academics who live in an alternate universe are all the results of the shadow of the department’s behavior.

It works hand in glove with the carcinogenic education/teacher unions and education credentialing schools while being the chief organizer and funder of the whole wasteful, counterproductive Education Conference Industry.

The savings would be in the hundreds of billions of dollars a year.

Free the schools!

Another Jimmy Carter creation, the Department of Energy, actually has some uses. However, it has become pork barrel for politically-connected green energy rent-seekers while it has also been compromised by activists-cum-bureaucrats working against traditional and proven forms of energy such as oil, coal and nuclear.

Most of the department can be shut down with a few independent agencies offices created for any legitimate needs (e.g. like the old Atomic Energy Agency). But by and large, the federal government’s role in energy should be more like a chaperon rather than a funder and picker of winners.

Tens of billions of dollars a year could be saved while also stimulating energy research at state levels.

Free the energy!

Already good things have been mentioned about reforming the Environmental Protection Agency, a Nixon bribe to liberals (that was ineffective — they still hated him). Trump has named Myron Ebell to oversee his transition.

One could argue that EPA does have some legitimate tasks. But clearly the agency is out of control, often claiming control of seemingly every drop of water and molecule of air in the United States. It’s famous for trampling the rights of property owners and mandating behavior of business and citizens. It has forced business and citizens caught within its web of harassment to “donate” to favored liberal “environmental” groups and causes as part of a “settlement.”

Its workers are hardcore liberal activists and it is one of the more ideological bunkers.Besides its political powers it often acts as the propaganda arm of the green movement and at times acts like the headquarters of the green movement’s attempt to bring the American economy under its control.

EPA should probably be completely dismantled and then reassembled, in a much smaller form, with new staff and its mission tightly defined by Congress.

The savings would likely be a few billion a year but the effect would be greater as Americans would be allowed to use their property as they see fit and businesses could act safe that there was not a bureaucrat looking to put them out of business or turn them into lapdogs.

Free the environment!

Bonus “E”: Equity. All offices in all of the federal departments and agencies that have the word “Equity” in them are to be completely shuttered. These offices are nothing but hives of political correctness in addition to being sources of mischief and funding for extreme left groups and academics. Plus, the workers are highly compensated, contribute nothing to the fiber of the country and these people often use their appointments to obtain even-more highly-compensated employment in “Diversity” offices of large corporations or become lucrative “consultants” for government and businesses.

Equity” and “Diversity” has been a growth industry for the last couple of decades, taking a stratospheric path during the Obama years. People need to be judged by the content of their character and their performance not the color of their skin or sex. Those latter two criteria are the sole criteria that these offices pay attention to. They are unAmerican.

Free the Americans!

Museum of Neosegregationism

You might have caught the story about Clarence Thomas, a sitting Supreme Court Justice, somehow not being included in any exhibits at the newly-opened National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Oh, no doubt you heard about the museum, the MSM and our cultural leaders couldn’t stop talking about it but the exclusion of Justice Thomas, well, that somehow didn’t make the news.

Surprise!

Not really.

The surprising thing is that so many conservatives thought that a museum created solely for politically correct reasons would actually treat conservatives (especially one as villified as Thomas is) with equality or respect.

Paul Mirengoff’s naive piece in Power Line  is typical of these.

The museum was never going to be anything other than a playpen for leftists; an employment and legitimizing program for left-wing black scholars and their guilt-ridden white sycophants; a tool for grievance- and guilt-mongering; a hive of endless Zinn-like anti-American and racist propaganda.

It’s also part of the continuing decline of the Smithsonian Institution into little more than just another once-great American organization degraded and drafted into service of the left.

Mirengoff, et al, when you set up museums for politically correct reasons, why are you surprised that political correctness reigns?

How could you possibly think that a museum based on skin color and whose design from day one was controlled by liberals and whose raison d’etre followed liberal historical memes was going to be anything less than a liberal hellhole.

Have you been under a rock for the last five decades?

It never ceases to amaze me how some conservatives still don’t understand that we are in a war. It’s like in the movie “United 93,” when it dawns on the FAA’s Ben Sliney that “We’re at war with somebody” as he watches planes smash into buildings. He shut the flight system down until it can be determined who’s attacking.

What’s so hard to understand here?

Like the shockingly underwhelming National Museum of African Art, the National Museum of African American History and Culture was created exclusively for political reasons — to placate or fulfill the demands of the neosegregationist movement. It was never designed for actual real scholarship. There’s already a Smithsonian (National Museum of American History) for that.

When I was a kid we had it beaten into our heads that Plessy v Ferguson, the core of “separate but equal,” was a bad, terrible, horrible, grotesque… decision. Yet somehow we’ve circled back to it and it’s not the white majority of the country dictating the separation of the races.

Knicks’ Noah Is a Nitwit

Carrying on the theme of “Our sports/athletics are going in the wrong direction,” here’s this story from last week on NBA player Joakim Noah deciding he’d ditch a traditional team dinner with West Point students because he… uh… doesn’t like war.

(Message to Noah — a lot of those grads don’t like war either but they are mature enough to understand that we live in a dangerous world. ‘Si vis pacem, para bellum’ — ‘If you want peace, prepare for war’ is a quote all of them know by heart.)

The obvious retort here is that these grads, and those before them, are a chief reason why Noah gets to entertain his own ignorance, while counting his millions.

Noah bent himself into a pretzel, more accurately the pretzel that a pretzel would eat, explaining that he wasn’t dissing the cadets but um… uh… er… he’s not grooving on “Kids killing kids.”

Yeah, who is?

A thought pattern that supremely shallow and dysfunctional shows how far our culture is drifting. But it seems to be increasingly typical of the well-compensated participants in our professional sports.

I’ve always liked Noah. He’s been a hard-working, team-oriented player his whole career. I’ve made use of his once gaudy rebounding stats (plus a few blocks and [bonus] assists) to be very competitive in NBA fantasy leagues.

This is depressing but, perhaps, a fitting end, since I’m boycotting the NBA and therefore the Yahoo! Sports NBA fantasy league.

That’s right, Adam Silver, no more watching the NBA Network and games on TNT or WGN, staying up late catching those West Coast games.

Cavalier — The Other Meaning

As a Virginia taxpayer, therefore a funder of the University of Virginia (‘Mr. Jefferson’s Learning City’ UVA recruiters used to say in every other sentence to us high school kids decades ago), this story about the UVA men’s basketball team deciding to go Black Lies Matter/Colon Kaepernick is most disheartening.

Yes, nothing like kids who are getting a free ride to one of the more expensive and elite schools in the nation complaining about injustice and inequality. As a Virginia taxpayer I say enough, send the lot of them packing if they hate America so much. I’m sure they can find equal opportunity and justice in Africa.

Hey, notice something, look at the picture in question, that team is actually disproportionately black. I’m sorry, in the spirit of racial “equality” at least four of the darker skinned fellows will have to be booted off the team. If you don’t leave then that proves you are a racist, a bigot and a hypocrite.

Wait, to be truly “equal” and in line with social justice, half the team needs to be female. And then we can get down to racism and divvy the team up by skin color. So ultimately only one or two of the players can be black. Hmmmmmm, I suspect they didn’t actually think their “virtue signaling” all the way through. But then they are at a school, allegedly to learn. Too bad nobody actually teaches them anything useful.

We are reaping the whirlwind of decades of miseducation. Kids are at school to learn but they’ve been coddled to think they are geniuses and are there to lead. The only thing “taught” at campuses these days is liberal/socialist propaganda.

It doesn’t help that the NCAA has suddenly decided to become highly politicized itself. It’s hard to tell kids to calm down when some of the adults themselves are using sports as a political weapon.

It seems that we’ve reentered another period of “youthful” insanity.

The ’60s kids thought that somehow they could live in a world where everyone could sit around staring at their navel, getting high and slinging clay or playing music and somehow the world would continue to work. Food would get grown and delivered, the electricity would flow, products would get made, bad guys would be kept at bay, etc…

That didn’t actually work out.

And kids are still stupid… But, hey, they’re kids. Too bad they don’t understand that. They seem to think they are supposed to be in charge. If they aren’t there to learn maybe we can just shut the whole place down…
