Can a Businessman Learn?

Donald Trump was a successful businessman (not that he didn’t have some failures) but his ascendancy to the presidency validates the point that the presidency isn’t a business position — at least as far as the current situation defines it.

No doubt before he became president Trump thought he could handle the Washington denizens. He figured that he knew a lot of Democrats in the past, had given to their campaigns and had worked with them in development projects.

I think that the the viciousness of the Washington national Democrats and their media auxiliaries ha stunned him.

A case in point — this whole Comey “memo” and Trump “obstruction of justice.”

Here’s what I suspect and think. We’ve only been treated to a highly edited, one-sided, possibly fictional version of what happened. I suspect that Trump did say to Comey at the meeting, when they were alone, that he should consider letting go of the Flynn matter. I also suspect there’s more to it. Something along the line of “You got your scalp. Flynn’s out. You know he didn’t do anything. You can call off the dogs.”

Trump’s mistake is that he thought Comey, and the Democrats in general, were honorable and were merely chasing Flynn to mark their territory and let the new president know that they are not to be trifled with. That they should be consulted with on big matters.

Trump the businessman has a grasp of such behavior. The county and city councils that he dealt with along with unions and the occasional Mafiosi behaved in a similar manner, until they were bought off with money, flattery and some choice jobs. In Trump’s experience, as an urban property developer, generally people want things developed so agreements can be reached, it’s just a matter of how much or who to employ or kowtow to. As corrupt as urban Democrats often are, they usually do want that eyesore redeveloped and they want the glory of being involved in such projects.

Washington Democrats do not operate that way.

They have one goal and one goal only — the accrual of power, total power. Everything is in service of that acquisition and anything in the way must be and will be destroyed. They are devoting their lives and the treasure (along with lots of other people’s treasure) to that goal.

Trump incorrectly thought that the taking down of Flynn was merely some muscle-flexing on the beach. Some letting the new guy in town know how things work if he wants to do business in the town.

It wasn’t. The Democrats deployed their knights and troops along with activating their media skirmishers to destroy Flynn. They will destroy everybody Trump sends out.

This whole “Russia Collusion” story is the pure distillation of that process.

Trump might think it will go away when he bribes the right people, appoints some Democrats or Democrat-approved people or compromises on the right issues. Not going to happen. Trump might think that the story will go away when the absurdity of it becomes apparent to a certain number of people and the media reports it honestly. Neither of those points mean a thing and the media will never report the story honestly. They are an arm of the Democratic party and can not operate separately of that brain any more than your arm can take on a life of its own.

There is currently one main short-term goal of the Democratic party and its disparate elements and allies in that quest for power — that is the destruction of Pres. Donald J. Trump. There will be no deviation or compromise of that goal. None.

The sooner Trump understands that, the sooner he can come up with a strategy for survival (and coincidentally, the United States as a free country rather than the totalitarian socialist state the Dems yearn for).

One leg, possibly the most important strategic long-term leg, is to Drain the Swamp.

While the Democrats and their generic allies in Hollywood, academia and business have other sources of income, influence and power, they ultimately depend on Washington in a way that a plant needs the sun. All the fertilizer and water mean nothing if there is no sun. Washington is that sun to the socialist campaign.

Start knocking the supports down and Democrat power lessens. The Dems are very weak at the state and county level so much of their lifeblood comes from two sources — very rich people (Hollywood, Silicon Valley and Wall Street) and Washington handouts. These handouts can come in the form of direct cash and/or influence.

They have an additional leg, not as wealthy, but it provides young, enthusiastic shock troops and serious cultural propaganda value — academia (K-12 and college).

Trump (AND THE DAMN CONGRESSIONAL GOP) need to start reducing numerous programs, agencies and departments.

There are so many targets of opportunity.

Start with the federalization of the student loan program. Kick it back to the private sector and states and make it clear that no one has a right to a federal government-funded education. It’s not in the Constitution.

National Labor Relations Board — Oh, Hell, yeah. Bulldoze it and salt the Earth that where it stood.

Eliminate the Dept. of Labor. It serves no purpose other than being a paid union and socialist clearinghouse. Anything that has to survive can be ported over to the Dept. of Commerce.

Eliminate the Dept. of Commerce. It serves no purpose other than being a pork barrel for select politically-connected business while also being a great place for socialists to make connections for better employment in the private sector. Anything that we just can’t live without can be reformulated in an agency.

The Dept. of Energy is a liberal pork barrel, increasingly being working against legitimate energy sources while funding green silliness. It’s legit functions with the nuclear energy industry can be put back into an agency like it was before or turned over to the U.S. Navy.

Seriously trim the Dept. of Interior. It was Ground Zero during the last government shutdown, revealing itself being staffed with hardcore liberals who viewed their fellow Americans (their actual employers) with disdain. They felt they owned the properties under their observation and that they, and only they, should be able to visit the parks and monuments.

Chase down every “green” program at every federal operation and shut it down. Chase down every “affirmative action,” “minority,” “diversity” or “inclusion” program at every agency and shut it down. You cannot believe the hundreds of millions, probably billions, of dollars these two liberal-stuffed rackets shake out of the federal government each year in the form of cash grants, conferences, giveaways and guaranteed contracts; every dollar of which goes to a liberal. The absurdity of the federal government “fighting” discrimination by openly discriminating is typical of the upside down world we live in.

There are so many liberal, anti-American, socialist NGOs and nonprofits wholly dependent upon federal funding or the imprimatur it carries. Hundreds, thousands of them. The mere threat to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting demonstrated this and how these people will cling to their taxpayer funds with every breath. They feel entitled to that money and feel it is theirs. They need to be apprised that this is wrong.

A bonus is that with the feds moving against these programs, states and counties would feel empowered to shut down their Mini-Me versions of these programs. Collateral damage would hit academia with devastating affect.

Put all these Democrat socialist soldiers out of a job. Get a real job with your NGO grievance-mongering experience. Or stock shelves at a 7-11.

Restore the Hatch Act to curtail open liberal intimidation in the agencies.Start with places like the IRS and Dept. of Justice. (And shut down any department or agency office with the words ‘Civil Rights’ or ‘Diversity’ in their title — these are fountains of mischief and vexation; they are not concerned about real ‘civil rights’ merely projecting their fascist power over their fellow citizens whom they view as backward).

Work with Congress to rein-in the out-of-control judiciary. Trim its powers — it is a Constitutional violation to have “inferior” judges sitting in judgment like a Roman emperor of Congressionally-passed laws or presidential actions. It might help to publicly depose several of the worst actors.

There’s more, sadly much more, but this would be a good start.

Pres. Trump needs to understand that, ultimately, swamp creatures will eat you. It’s what they do. They see you as an invader and a threat. Stop feeding them!

Preexisting Conditions

The dumbing down of America continues unabated. One of the key holdups in the health care debate is “preexisting conditions.” It’s a bitter-end issue for Democrats and for way-too many Republican squishes.

They seem to think that insurers or the government should enroll and payout for people who have “preexisting conditions.”

There’s a reason that Lloyds of London, the original modern insurance company, never covered and doesn’t cover leaking ships, sinking ships or, most importantly, sunk ships. After all, why would you buy insurance ahead of time and pay for it if you really didn’t need it; if you could wait until the ship was going down or on the bottom? You could just show up at Lloyds and pay one premium and then claim the full-value of the sunk ship — i.e. receive far more than you paid in.

Obviously, losing money at a prodigious rate, the company wouldn’t last long. Nor will insurance companies nor a federal program if “preexisting” condition people are allowed to bring their costly afflictions into the pool.

The system doesn’t work, can’t work, when such actors are brought in. It only works when less is taken out than put in. It only works if most participants are healthy and remain so.

Trying to cover everyone and every cost is a prescription for failure.

Third-party payer systems the modern health care insurance system cannot succeed under such pressures. They, like socialism, will always fail.

Adding to this road to perdition is the belief of far too many people that government is god. That government can take care of everyone (or force some company to take care of people at a loss). Government, in their eyes, has infinite resources.

It doesn’t help when people like Jimmy Kimmel, who has usually been the least left-wing late night host, goes on a “We-should-spend-as-much-money-as-necessary-to-save-my-kid” rant one night. Has everyone lost the ability to think rationally? Kimmel has millions. He could afford to pay for his child’s surgery out of his own pocket. He’s free to do what Danny Thomas did and raise money for a private foundation to perform medical miracles for ill children. Instead, he decides that everyone should be paying, whether they have sick children or not.

A system built on such a mentality will absorb more and more resources until it swallows everything.

State Street Hypocrites

The Wall Street Journal recently reported in one of those typical feel-good-right-side-of-history stories, written almost always by its female reporters, that financial firm State Street, based in, where else, Boston, is insisting that companies it does business with put more women on those company’s boards and that it would vote against board members who were insufficiently enthusiastic with such causes.

It’s giving companies a year to comply. Or else, I guess.

The CEO of State Street Global Advisors, one Ronald O’Hanley, not a woman, said, oddly,“If someone could convince us that the absence of diversity or gender diversity is not a problem, we’re leaving that open. Will they? I doubt it.”

So, Ronnie, would that little bit of business philosophy include State Street Global Advisors own “Leadership Team”? It’s a regular Boys Club — 23 men to 5 women. It’s parent company, State Street, features 62 men and 18 women in its “Leadership Team.”

Perhaps some of those chaps will be leaving and be replaced by someone with her sex organs on the inside? (An odd way to measure qualifications for employment in a financial company.)

No?

Hhhhmmmmm, the classic liberal behavior, do as I say not as I do; AKA hypocrisy.

What’s changing, increasingly, is that the liberals that have take over so much of American business are willing to employ those businesses as weapons against other Americans. They are also abandoning their fiduciary duties in service of liberalism, fascism and socialism.

But back to that March 7 story. It deploys the usual weepy statistics about the lack of women on boards and how those companies with women do so much better than the small handful that don’t have any; or at least they did several years ago when the “study” conducted by State Street (surprise!) said so.

The story has one last kiss — a picture of a Dega-esque statue that State Street planned to place in front of the famous Wall Street bulls statue. I gather she’s supposed to face them like that lone Chinese man faced the tanks in Tiananmen Square. Subtlety isn’t exactly a liberal specialty.

Historical accuracy isn’t one either. But then history doesn’t serve as history for history’s sake or to be learned from in the eyes of the liberal but rather slaved to the propaganda mission and if it has to be plasticized and recast into different forms as if it were Play-Doh, then so be it; it served its purpose.

International Without a Woman Day or Whatever…

Yet another shockingly dumb “movement” thing from liberals. And of course it is adopted and whitewashed by politicians, news media and other cultural arbiters as harmless as Arbor Day (but also incredibly important too!!!!).

Believe it or not, a local school system, City of Alexandria (Va.), is giving the students the day off.

Not surprisingly, either, The U.N. is all for it and involved, along with many useless parasite NGOs.

Being left out of all this by our cultural commissars are the hardcore left organizers. Gee, I wonder why?

Lessee, a convicted Palestinian terrorist and the ubiquitous human communist/racist cancer, Angela Davis are involved. And somehow our watchdog media missed this.

Eh, maybe not. Most of them like Angie Davis and they are cool with Palestinian terrorists too (so long as they concentrate on killing Israelis).

Check out these exposés on the march/day leaders from the New York Post, Legal Insurrection, Blue Lives Matter and Front Page.

Hey, how about a Day Without Men? You know, no cops (the serious ones, ya’ know); no firemen (the serious ones, ya’ know); no military (the serious ones, ya’ know); no repairmen; no contractors; no serious outdoor laborers; a serious curtailment of business; etc.

No, you say? Yeah, the idea is absurd. Most men don’t play such nonsense…

Isn’t It Funny?

Isn’t it funny that socialists always insist that they are doing whatever it is they are doing for the benefit of the poor. Yet in case after case it is the poor that ultimately suffer the most under socialist leadership?

Pick a country, any country… Venezuela is a good recent example. They are practically starving to death and they spend most of their day trying to find food.

And to think of it Obama praised the genius behind the decline, Hugo Chavez, “Mi amigo…” And, of course, Bernie Sanders loves what Venezuela’s recent leadership has done with the place.

Trumportunity: Start With E

One of the first things, if not the first thing, for Donald Trump to do after inaugurated is to “Drain the Swamp.” This is already a popular meme for The Donald. And he’s given an indication that he will relish swinging the hammer to destroy the weaponized elements of the federal government that are used to enrich liberals, power them and to destroy conservatives and other political enemies.

A good start, as I call it, would be start start with the Es: Education, EPA and Energy. Two cabinet-level departments and an agency of great power have been compromised and turned into nests of corrupt leftism enriching like-minded cronies, funding like-minded activists, expanding government control over the citizenry along with harassing businesses and taxpayers.

The Department of Education, part of Jimmy Carter’s legacy, should be simply shut down, rooted out. It serves no useful or Constitutional purpose. Its Obama administration takeover of the student loan market is a ticking time bomb. The federal government has no business in the student loan market.

Even scarier from the Dept. of Ed has been the political mischief it has foisted upon the American education system. At all levels from collegiate to kindergarten, there’s no segment that has escaped the Sauronic eye of Ed.

Particularly pernicious has been its “Office of Civil Rights” (or something like that. This nest of crazed leftie vipers has issued “guidelines” threatening numerous schools at all levels with defunding and prosecution if those schools do not accede to the hardcore leftwing dreams of the office’s bureaucrats and appointees. Implementation of “Title IX” alone would be reason to blow the building up and salt the ground.

It has also pushed the shocking decline of educational achievement and turbocharging of political correctness. The absurd surreality of our campuses with special snowflakes, along with the Kafkaesque behavior and academics who live in an alternate universe are all the results of the shadow of the department’s behavior.

It works hand in glove with the carcinogenic education/teacher unions and education credentialing schools while being the chief organizer and funder of the whole wasteful, counterproductive Education Conference Industry.

The savings would be in the hundreds of billions of dollars a year.

Free the schools!

Another Jimmy Carter creation, the Department of Energy, actually has some uses. However, it has become pork barrel for politically-connected green energy rent-seekers while it has also been compromised by activists-cum-bureaucrats working against traditional and proven forms of energy such as oil, coal and nuclear.

Most of the department can be shut down with a few independent agencies offices created for any legitimate needs (e.g. like the old Atomic Energy Agency). But by and large, the federal government’s role in energy should be more like a chaperon rather than a funder and picker of winners.

Tens of billions of dollars a year could be saved while also stimulating energy research at state levels.

Free the energy!

Already good things have been mentioned about reforming the Environmental Protection Agency, a Nixon bribe to liberals (that was ineffective — they still hated him). Trump has named Myron Ebell to oversee his transition.

One could argue that EPA does have some legitimate tasks. But clearly the agency is out of control, often claiming control of seemingly every drop of water and molecule of air in the United States. It’s famous for trampling the rights of property owners and mandating behavior of business and citizens. It has forced business and citizens caught within its web of harassment to “donate” to favored liberal “environmental” groups and causes as part of a “settlement.”

Its workers are hardcore liberal activists and it is one of the more ideological bunkers.Besides its political powers it often acts as the propaganda arm of the green movement and at times acts like the headquarters of the green movement’s attempt to bring the American economy under its control.

EPA should probably be completely dismantled and then reassembled, in a much smaller form, with new staff and its mission tightly defined by Congress.

The savings would likely be a few billion a year but the effect would be greater as Americans would be allowed to use their property as they see fit and businesses could act safe that there was not a bureaucrat looking to put them out of business or turn them into lapdogs.

Free the environment!

Bonus “E”: Equity. All offices in all of the federal departments and agencies that have the word “Equity” in them are to be completely shuttered. These offices are nothing but hives of political correctness in addition to being sources of mischief and funding for extreme left groups and academics. Plus, the workers are highly compensated, contribute nothing to the fiber of the country and these people often use their appointments to obtain even-more highly-compensated employment in “Diversity” offices of large corporations or become lucrative “consultants” for government and businesses.

Equity” and “Diversity” has been a growth industry for the last couple of decades, taking a stratospheric path during the Obama years. People need to be judged by the content of their character and their performance not the color of their skin or sex. Those latter two criteria are the sole criteria that these offices pay attention to. They are unAmerican.

Free the Americans!

Myron Magnet Speaks the Truth

Myron Magnet is one of my favorite writers. He can often be read at the indispensable City Journal.

I can’t do any better than this takeaway from the recent election, Donald Trump and the Rejection of Progressivism. It begins with this and gets better: “One message to take away from Donald Trump’s presidential victory: Americans don’t want to be ruled.

Go read and enjoy. This week the future of this country suddenly became much brighter.
