Tailgaters

I’m not referring to those pregame partiers.

No, I’m talking about those aggressive drivers who sit on your bumper, trying to push you along.

I was driving home at night a few weeks ago when a vehicle pulled up on me as I traveled down the road. I could tell it was an SUV or pickup because the lights were high so my car interior was filled with light. I figured it was about two feet off my bumper. This continued for about a mile.

I raised my arm and waved. The kindly driver then flashed me with his brights.

Was that an acknowledgment and he’d back off?

No, he just kept on me another mile to the next light — a double left turn. I pulled off to the furthest left lane and the pickup pulled by in the next turn lane. As he went by the gentleman gave me the finger.

What a class act.

Mind you, I was going the speed limit and it was around 8:00 at night on one of the busiest roads in northern Virginia. Still, I made sure my doors were locked.

So we all turned onto Guinea Road and Speed Racer got right onto the back bumper of the next car in front of him. As we ascended the hill that car hopped over into my lane to let the ass-wipe pass by and then he returned to the other lane.

So, I ask you, tailgaters, why do you do what you do? Are you so special that everyone must get out of your way? Think about what you are doing.

A Parting Gift for Harry

In saluting the departure of Sen. Harry Reid, the paragon of Senate virtue and decorum, I am proposing that Sen. Mitch McConnell and the incoming Donald Trump administration recognize the good senator’s stellar conduct and accomplishments with an honor worthy of his exemplary record.

Reactivate and rename the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste storage facility in Nevada — the Sen. Harry Reid Hot Waste Storage Facility.

No need to thank me, senator, you earned it.

Knicks’ Noah Is a Nitwit

Carrying on the theme of “Our sports/athletics are going in the wrong direction,” here’s this story from last week on NBA player Joakim Noah deciding he’d ditch a traditional team dinner with West Point students because he… uh… doesn’t like war.

(Message to Noah — a lot of those grads don’t like war either but they are mature enough to understand that we live in a dangerous world. ‘Si vis pacem, para bellum’ — ‘If you want peace, prepare for war’ is a quote all of them know by heart.)

The obvious retort here is that these grads, and those before them, are a chief reason why Noah gets to entertain his own ignorance, while counting his millions.

Noah bent himself into a pretzel, more accurately the pretzel that a pretzel would eat, explaining that he wasn’t dissing the cadets but um… uh… er… he’s not grooving on “Kids killing kids.”

Yeah, who is?

A thought pattern that supremely shallow and dysfunctional shows how far our culture is drifting. But it seems to be increasingly typical of the well-compensated participants in our professional sports.

I’ve always liked Noah. He’s been a hard-working, team-oriented player his whole career. I’ve made use of his once gaudy rebounding stats (plus a few blocks and [bonus] assists) to be very competitive in NBA fantasy leagues.

This is depressing but, perhaps, a fitting end, since I’m boycotting the NBA and therefore the Yahoo! Sports NBA fantasy league.

That’s right, Adam Silver, no more watching the NBA Network and games on TNT or WGN, staying up late catching those West Coast games.

Aggressive Driving

One of my biggest peeves (what’s a stronger word than ‘peeve’?) is aggressive driving.

As far as I’m concerned aggressive drivers are selfish and self-centered people. I can’t assign a political leaning to them but I can observe that drivers from bright blue Washington D.C. and Maryland, tend to be particular aggressive. Local northern Virginians are slightly less-so though folks with Obama stickers on their bumpers, inevitably driving expensive cars, often SUVs and crossover vehicles, do seem to be disproportionately aggressive. That wouldn’t be surprising if it were true since so many liberals believe that laws are for other people, not them.

So today’s story.

It was raining, often heavily, this morning. There had been several accidents in the area, including one in an intersection I would have to go through on my way to work.

So as I was heading down Braddock Road I noticed that a BMW crossover was tailgating me. I was giving the ambulance in front of me plenty of room and I was traveling around the speed limit – as I generally do. And it was lightly raining, the road was very wet.

Eventually a gap opened up to my right and the BMW shot into it and whipped by me, cutting in front of me closely on my front end to demonstrate their disapproval of my driving. There was plenty of room to travel further to cut into the lane.

I was just crushed that the person disapproved of my safe driving.

The BMW then gunned it, zipping up to the ambulance and tailgated it for a mile until the ambulance got into a left turn lane. With some free air the BMW shot forward again, probably doing 50 or so until it rolled up another a car. Of course I’d catch up to the Beemer at each red light.

The BMW eventually pulled into a left turn lane — tailgating the car in front of it as usual. As I continued onward and passed by I looked to see who was driving. I have a fascination at seeing who these morons are. It was a middle-aged woman.

I usually don’t see middle-aged women driving aggressively. They’ll be driving minivans incompetently — distracted on phones or by kids — but are rarely aggressive. The aggressive ones tend to be driving expensive coupes (Lexus, BMW, et al) and have D.C. or Maryland plates.

But my real complaint isn’t women drivers but aggressive drivers, any gender.

What is wrong with you people? Are in that much of a hurry? Are you that special that others must get out of your way or we have to watch out for you but you don’t have to look out for us?

People, we all have to share the road. Show some consideration.

Unity! (Except for Those Horrible Trump Followers)

There’s something weird about Hillary Clinton harping about “Stronger Together” and campaigning endlessly on “unity” yet spending most of her campaign energy not debating Trump but issuing ad hominem attacks on him and his supporters and practically demanding that they be banished from polite society.

Yet it wouldn’t be the first time that a liberal displayed a complete lack of self-awareness (see: Obama, Barack Hussein, AKA King Barry I).

I dare a reporter to ask her about the contradictory stance. C’mon. I bet she’d flat out deny there’s a contradiction.

The Enemy Which Dare Not Speak Its Name

Actually the enemy, crazed Muslims, happily says its name, it’s our cultural elite that refuses to acknowledge that we have an enemy, we are at war and the name of the enemy is Islam (AKA Muslims, radical Muslims and similar names).

This is a follow-up to my earlier post, The Missing Muslims.

Watching sports this weekend again led to a mystery — somebody did something in Paris recently but it’s a mystery as to who it was or even what it really was. According to one of the Euroleague basketball commentators, leading up to a moment of silence, something “violent” happened there but the Euroleague was all about peace. What could it have been?

One other sports commentator nit to pick — I believe it was Paul Romanuk while doing the Maple Leafs/Bruins game on NHL Network Saturday night managed to get in a jab at U.S. Republicans. After showing a clip of some player or coach in a locker room repeating himself over and over in answer to questions lobbed at him, Romanuk said (from my memory), “He was repeating himself like a Republican repeats talking points.” Hey, Paulie, when are those Democrat jokes coming? Maybe something like, “The ice is so white that Democrats won’t play on it!”

Arrrrggghh! Hockey is one of the few refuges from political correctness, NHL, don’t let Canadian turds ruin it too.

While I’m at it, let’s go after another enemy – politically correct racism, as practiced in sports.

As NASCAR winds its season up, riddle me this: Why is it that NASCAR is pressured to stop the endless country music playing? Why are there complaints that NASCAR’s audience is too white and it needs to change itself to “attract” minorities? That its events are in “white” areas like the South (I can’t recall any race tracks in inner city Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc.) or rural majority white states like New Hampshire?

Why does Major League Baseball make a big to-do about its “Urban Youth Academies,” designed to recruit more black athletes to play baseball (rather than, say, basketball and football). Why does MLB have a bizarre obsession with Jackie Robinson? For instance every team, even those not in existence when Robinson played, were required to retire his number 42? Why is it the only number featured onstage at MLB-owned MLB Network? Why do people like Chris Rock publicly whine that there aren’t enough black players in baseball yet they would go into nuclear meltdown if someone said that there aren’t enough white players in the NBA or that the rap music played at NBA arenas might be cut back some in favor of something “white”? (Ask former Atlanta Hawks part-owner Bruce Levenson about that last point.)

Despite claims decades ago that whites would abandon sports when black athletes appeared, no such thing ever happened. Yet we have the reverse now — that blacks won’t go to sports wherein they don’t see “enough” black faces competing. Obviously in NASCAR it’s pretty much impossible to see the skin color of the driver but other sports might be subject to such racism. White people flock to the NBA and NFL. Are black people that racist that they won’t go to baseball or NASCAR because of skin colors? I dunno. I see plenty of black people at baseball games.

No one is suggesting a “white” or “suburb” academy for the NBA, NFL (or, for that matter, MLB). Why? Well, obviously it’s a stupid idea. Yet the idea becomes sacred when flipped on its head.

But why should anyone care? Frankly, I find the obsession with skin color to be tiresome. Like most sports fans, I want to see the best — not the skin color. I would love to never have to write about race ever again but liberals will never let it be.
